heheh.  Your wonderful pictures shown that beauty can be found if we just look and that a good laugh always lifts a person's spirit.  I love see the "historic" pictures as that is a big interst to me and April, that picture of the Mickey or Minnie on that womens butt so too funny that I really did burst out laughing. LOL  It was a great release after running an errand and not being waited on for quite awhile. You all are GREAT.  I think we need to make a plan for the sisters to have a party. We need to "reconnect" and have some fun. LOL

I haven't had dinner yet, and it is quite late.   Too much time at the lumber yard. lol  However, I just had to post before getting dinner to thank you both.  Luv ya.....

*off to get something to eat*

Awwwww.....Love you too Luv .....glad you are feeling better

Re: Finally, THE FINALE

This is for you, View.....(and anyone else who might be interested!).....to conclude Chaco Canyon!!!    Pretty interesting narrative.....and to think that no one really knows what or why!!  Mysteries are favorites of mine too....fiction or nonfiction.

Pueblo Bonito ruins, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico
Deep in the remote deserts of northwestern New Mexico lie the extensive ruins of the greatest architectural achievement of the northern American Indians. Known as the Chaco Canyon complex, the site was the main social and ceremonial center of the Anasazi culture. We do not actually know what these people called themselves; the word Anasazi is a Navaho word meaning variously "the ancient ones" or "the enemies of our ancient fathers." The early Anasazi (100 BC.) were nomadic hunter-gatherers ranging over great expanses of territory; by AD 700 they had begun to live in settled communities, of which Chaco Canyon is the finest example. Intensive construction occurred throughout Chaco Canyon from AD 900 to 1100, resulting in the development of several sophisticated dwelling complexes. Pueblo Bonito (meaning "pretty village" in Spanish; the original Anasazi name being unknown) had more than six hundred rooms, numerous two- and three-storey buildings, several ceremonial structures called kivas, and a population between 800 and 1200 persons. From tree-ring dating, it is known that a period of great drought came upon the Chaco area in AD 1150, causing the abandonment of the site. Rediscovered in 1849 by U.S. Army soldiers, the site was severely vandalized for seventy years until it was made a national monument in 1907. In 1920, National Geographic Society began a thorough reconstruction of the site.

Radiating out from the Chaco complex are an enigmatic series of straight lines that extend ten to twenty miles into the desert. Conventional archaeological theories explain these lines as roads leading to outlying settlements, but this seems highly unlikely, as the lines are arrow straight regardless of terrain. They go over mesas(table-top mountains), up and down vertical cliff faces, and along ways that make them utterly impractical for use by the casual or commercial traveler. Perhaps they had another purpose. Paul Devereux, a British scholar and writer in the so called "Earth Mysteries" field has suggested that these lines (and others he has studied around the world) are better understood as markings that represent the out-of-body spirit travels of ancient shamans. Archaeological research does indeed indicate that the lines often lead to small shrine-like structures where evidence of religious and shamanistic activity is common. These mysterious lines, sometimes apparently between no particular places, are found in many parts of the Anasazi region. More than five hundred miles of the lines have so far been charted. Nowadays they are mostly visible only from the air in the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun casts deep shadows. Inspecting these lines at ground level, it is evident that they have been acted upon by many hundreds of years of natural erosion, which has obscured all but scarce remains. It therefore seems reasonable to suggest that these lines, prior to their erosion, could have been followed across great expanses of land, thereby delineating an enormous grid or map of sacred and shamanistic geography. Readers interested in these matters should consult the books of Devereux listed in the bibliography.

I absolutely love him, and he’s an incredible person. We have this friendship that I have no doubt in my mind is a life-long friendship.  Getting a chance to know him away from training for Dancing With the Stars, I think we've gotten a chance to know each other in a different way, which of course just makes you closer. While I'm on a roll, I'll give you a quick tour of another fascinating place in the Southwest. This one is Chaco Canyon, NM....literally somewhere only accessible by this road....and I remember it well when we went there in 1990, purely on a lark as we passed the sign on the highway to Farmington and I said, "Turn off!!! We might never get to see this otherwise!!!" This is 30 miles of what is called a washboard road....one of those things that looks like the old metal washboards our grandmothers used to scrub clothes!!! Now you only see them in museums---or describe dirt roads in NM!!! LOL

These ruins date from 850AD to 1150AD when the Anasazi just disappeared from the area. It is unknown what happened to them or if or how any of them survived. It is surmised that the water dried up (hmmm...that would do it!). The amazing thing is that they grew corn 75-100 miles away and built granaries in which to store it! The Anasazi are believed to the the ancestors of all the pueblo Indians.

This is an amazing photo that shows a lot of detail and how accurately the buildings were constructed from stone slabs.

These windows were made like this for a reason. Note they are on line with each other.

Pottery from various Indian tribes or pueblos is unique to those people or cultures. These are from Chaco Canyon:

This is the Kiva, which was the center of the city, if you will. Religious ceremonies were held there and there was significance to every aspect of it.

Ok....it's now really time to hoe!!! Enjoy the travelogue!!!

Thanks for sharing this beauty to be found in NM. I have driven across the state a couple of times but never lived there and haven't seen the wondrous things you showed us.
