Re: 1st Anniversary for the Ladies Room! (they said it'd never last. Hah!!

Hi, everyone!  Hope you all have had a wonderful Saturday!

Had a busy one myself...did some shopping and some sewing, made breakfast and dinner for 3 of us as son was in town to have a father/son day out flying model airplanes.  Weather wasn't dreadfully hot but put the A/C on this afternoon while the oven was going to keep it bearable!!  Time to open the doors and windows again now that the breeze is cooling off.

Thanks for your thoughts for us out here in the severely dry state of California.  Daughter and SIL said that they are getting brown/yellow haze from the fires blazing in NoCal---and there have been reports of ash falling in Eureka.  I think the closest fire to them is in the mountains near Trinity, which is probably 30+ miles away??  Just guessing because I'm not sure.  We rarely make the drive there from Redding across those mountains.  Too boring to to up I-5 to Redding when you can cut off a few miles by going across Clear Lake or through the east Bay Area.

Someone posted a photo of the fire in Clear Lake.  Because we know that area quite well from years of driving to Eureka, I uploaded some pics to share.  It is a beautiful little, quaint although kinda shabby, resort town/area on a narrow 2-lane road (Hwy 20) that cuts from I-5 at Williams (60 mi. n. of Sac) west to Hwy 101 just above Ukiah (about 85 mile drive).  We often go that way.  Once you hit 101 it is all Redwoods and the road is built along the Eel River.

Here is a another photo of the fire in that area now--although the picture is very small, there is a huge amount of dry brush and foliage along that highway with limited access by road.  BAD place for a wild fire even though there is water in the lakes (there are 3 or 4 lakes that all border each other across the valley; I think the largest of the lot is Clear Lake)

Here is a photo of the lake itself.  Doesn't do it justice really but still a pretty and peaceful place.

Here is a map that shows where Clear Lake is relative to SF and Sac.  Clear Lake is south of Redding a couple hours' drive but west of I-5 maybe 40-50 miles.

This photo shows Eureka on the north coast so you can get an idea of how far north the fires are spanning.  Distance from SF to Eureka is about 275 miles.  There are many fires all around northern CA which is quite unusual.

Please keep firefighters and residents in those areas in your thoughts and prayers.  There is nothing to do but GET OUT.  There are now over 9,000 firefighters from inside and outside of the state fighting 23 or 24 fires.  One firefighter from South Dakota died yesterday or today just doing his job.

I absolutely love him, and he’s an incredible person. We have this friendship that I have no doubt in my mind is a life-long friendship.  Getting a chance to know him away from training for Dancing With the Stars, I think we've gotten a chance to know each other in a different way, which of course just makes you closer. Saying good bye to the granddaughter today.  She is on her way back to Pittsburgh and grad school.  Sigh, where have the years gone?  I HATE it when she leaves, I'm shot for he rest of the day.  We have had a wonderful week though, lots of together time and laughs.  Can't ask for anything more than that I guess.

I remember when my son would go off to college...it was hard even after 4 years....Glad you had time together and made some memories...

This is so sad

Sad but still a reality in the west.  Aside from the human factor, which we all empathize with, there is a reason for fires as a part of the cycle of nature.  I'm sure you all probably know that fire is a way of cleaning out the overgrown dry and dead brush and forests to allow new growth and life to spring up and to flourish.  Because humans are affected by living in those areas, property and human loss become by products of what is otherwise just a part of nature (lightning strikes).  When we pass lovely areas and dream of perhaps living there, the next thought is: "But what about fire danger?!!"  It's a jerk back to reality!
