Judge Insists on Proof ‘DWTS’ Contestant Bindi Irwin’s Dad Is Dead

Bindi Irwin’s “Dancing With the Stars” contract has hit a roadblock.


According to documents obtained by TheWrap, Los Angeles Judge Maren Nelson has declared that Bindi, a 17-year-old minor, must provide a release from both parents in order to officially enter into the contract with the dance competition series.


The problem, of course, is that Bindi’s father, Steve, famously died in 2006 while shooting a segment for his hit wildlife documentary series “The Crocodile Hunter.”

It’s unclear if Nelson didn’t know that fact or simply demanded formal documentation of his on-camera death when a stingray pierced his heart.


“Petitioner has failed to show that the minor’s father irrevocably and perpetually released, relinquished, and quitclaimed to the minor any interest he may have to the minor’s earnings under the contract,” the judge’s decision read.


“Without a showing that the minor is entitled to her earnings under the contract, the court is unable to find that it is in the best interest of the minor to be bound by the terms of the contract,” it continued.

Bindi’s mother, Terri Irwin, signed a release forfeiting any claim to money her daughter makes while competing on the show. Under the terms of the deal, Bindi is guaranteed $125,000.
Her weekly fee for appearing on the show could go as high as $50,000 if she makes it to the finale. As of this week, she is still in the running.
