Thanks for the recipe View...I can't wait to try it!!!!

Some great "stuff" on this thread!

View: this recipe is pretty close to the way we cook our carnitas (pork) for tamales.  I think the only addition would be a bay leaf or two and swapping out the salsa for water.  What we do after the pork is shredded is mix some of the red sauce we've made into the meat....so that would work as well.  Haven't made tamales in the past couple of years (seems everyone is too busy and it takes alot of hands to do 500 or so to distribute to the family!) but carnitas, which is what you have there, is one of my favorite Mexican restaurant dishes.

Putting the temperature to warm is perfect since the lower the temperature, the more tender the meat will be--and you should let it rest for 10 minutes anyway before cutting it.

I cook my Thanksgiving and/or Christmas turkeys upside down at 150 degrees in the oven overnice the day before and stuff it in the morning; you then put it back in the oven right side up.  I start it at about 11 PM on 300 for 1 hr. (that's the only downside--having the stay up till about midnite when you're already exhausted!)--this kills any bacteria--then reduce the temperature until morning when it gets stuffed.  You can cook it at that temperature till a couple hours before you plan to serve it when you start ramping up the oven temp about 50 degrees at a time for 20 or 30 minutes each setting until the thermometer reaches poultry temperature.  Most moist and tender turkey you'll ever eat!  I'm flattered that my grandchildren have demanded that I cook the turkey and stuffing because "it's the best!"  My kids never said that!!!  LOL

So, according to Tango...there are cheese making kits that you can get on line.    I am going to order this one, it got many good comments, and give it to my husband for Christmas.  He especially loves sharp cheddar (7yrs aged) that we sometimes buy in Wisconsin as we drive through.   Not likely to make that!

But it looks like fun.

Might have to do that too!!  Thanks, tango.

View...you mentioned something about photography, what did you want to know????

I was just wondering if you have a certain type of camera.  Do you use special lenses, try to get different effects.   I like to take pictures too - just amateur and for our own enjoyment.  We used to have a panoramic camera.  That was fun.  My husband took some beautiful vistas when we were in Hawaii.

Some of these effects are cute.  I've never tried this:

I think these shots are fun...I have done a few and so has my daughter in law (she has a photography business out of her house)

I use a Canon Digital SLR and a point and shoot...I also have a Canon film camera.  Both of the larger body cameras I can change the lenses on them and I have several different ones depending on what I am going to be shooting.

I love photography it is my escape.  I am hoping to get a new digital sometime in the near future when I can afford it....LOL

About a year ago my son bought his 2nd Canon SLR camera because he started a blog and wanted to post videos.  I was with him when he shopped at Costco for either a Canon or a Nikon.  Got a very knowledgeable older salesman to give him the spiel on both cameras he was looking at--and decided on the Canon.  I can get the model number if anyone is interested.

At any rate, just the other day he mentioned how "awesome" that camera is!  The salesman had told him the video was superior on the Canon to the Nikon (he had used or owned both)....and apparently he was right.  I can attest that it takes great pictures also.

I have a newer Canon point and shoot (about a year old--it replaced the one I lost on vacation in 2014) that does more than I will ever learn to use!  Both Luv and Gunner havenbought the same camera...and we're all very happy with what it does.

That's about all I know about cameras!!!  HAHA!!!  I'm always interested in learning, tho.

Here's one of my favorite crock pot recipes.

1 2-3 lb. shoulder round roast, sliced thinly
2-2 large onions, thinly sliced
4-5 garlic cloves, peeled
several sprigs of fresh thyme
salt & pepper
2 bottles of beer
olive oil
several slices of stale bread

Brown the beef quickly at high heat.   Meanwhile saute the onions until tender.   Layer the beef slices and onions, topping each layer with a couple of cloves of garlic and sprigs of thyme.   Salt & pepper as you go.   Pour beer over the top until it nearly covers the beef.  Top with stale bread and cover.  Cook on high heat, 3-4 hours or low heat over night or all day.

I'll try this one too, tango!  Sounds nice!

Re: Real Life - The Sisters' Show and Tell

Tango, Jet...thanks for additional delicious sounding slow cooker ideas.  Jet, I wonder if you could share the recipe you use for the home made "red sauce".   Homemade tamales!!

I wonder if you gals know this trick.  It is for the adventurous, who use their Crock Pot for cakes, bread, etc.

I think they also have ones that you can grow your own mushrooms.

Re: Real Life - The Sisters' Show and Tell

Some of you may want to check out this site if you love to read.  Especially in the winter - and after the Christmas rush, I love a really good book.  This is the Good Reads compilation of the Best of 2014.  The 2015 list has not yet been voted on.

So if you like fiction...click on that category.  Historical fiction...some really great ones there.  Biographies, etc.

Re: Real Life - The Sisters' Show and Tell

Love the Christmas trees!

I was looking for soup for lunch and put this together with one I had on hand.
1 can tomato sauce
1 can whole tomatoes with juice
1 Tbsp. butter
1/2 tsp. sugar
1/2 cup finely chopped basil
1 clove garlic, sliced.

Bring all ingredients, except butter,  to a boil and simmer for 5-6 min.   Remove from heat, add butter, and roughly blend with an immersion blender.

"Carpe fucking diem!"  - Maks said it.
Sorry, I had to use this.  I haven't laughed so much in a long time.

Re: Real Life - The Sisters' Show and Tell

I'm going to make your layered beef Crock Pot recipe this weekend, tango.  I admit I'm curious what the stale bread does...or what it becomes.  Sounds delicious though.
