Re: New Year - New Beginnings

Hi, everyone. CEK, I'm glad  you survived the storm. I hope no one was hit too hard. It missed us completely (YAY!). I'm not sure what the weather has in store for us this week. I'm too busy to have snow interfere!!!!!! I hope everyone is doing well, especially our niece.

I don’t remember us posting on this. When I read it this morning, I cried. What a beautiful writing by Tom Bergeron on his hometown, growing up, his family, and how he got to where he is today. From The Boston Globe, “From Haverhill to Hollywood”. A must read….and while you do so, keep in mind Tom wrote this a month before his Dad died….

‘A little shack by the railroad track.”

That’s how my parents would affectionately refer to my childhood home in Haverhill. “Shack” was crucial for achieving the rhyme but inaccurate for describing the house. Built in 1925, it might not have been a mansion, but it was hardly a candidate for Shanty Town. Literally the “last house on the left” on a narrow dead-end street, it had one small bathroom, three modest bedrooms, and, beginning in my high school years in 1971, a comparatively sizable addition that quickly became the home’s social centerpiece.

Not all of the rhyme was exaggerated. We did live near an active railroad track, a winding river, and thick, inviting woods, which, taken together, provided a setting for countless flights of imagination.

As I child, I convinced myself that the adjacent tangle of trees was, at various times, populated by Nazi soldiers, extraterrestrials, Dracula, the Mummy, and Bigfoot. So of course on a given summer’s day, or after a grueling few hours in grade school, I would bravely disappear down its haphazard dirt path to see whether I could find them. I never did. A stray bunny, occasionally, but never a goose-stepper or vampire.

I ran away from that home once. This was due, no doubt, to some cruel indignity foisted upon me by my parents (“No, eat ALL of your vegetables!”). I “ran” about 20 yards to an opening in the brush by the dirt path. I brought with me a pillow, a wind-up alarm clock (a runaway doesn’t want to oversleep), and a peanut butter sandwich….

That is epic. I remember watching him on "People are Talking" back in the day.

Pray for the 3 victims and 176 injured in the Boston Marathon explosion on April 15, 2013. Pray for love to triumph, for peace to ...

This is the hymn with which I am associated by my college classmates.   It is also the song my mom associated with me.  I heard it on the radio when I was seventeen and learned the words.  I sang the words to two different very talented women and they made their own arrangements.  One day during my freshman year at Wheaton College, I was singing this song in a practice room in the conservatory.  And I heard a glorious tenor voice in the hallway singing with me in Swedish.   It was the janitor around 60 years old.  I hope you enjoy it.  I was unable to find a really good video because none of the big names have recorded their version of this song.  The words are wonderful. It is called "Day By Day and With Each Passing Moment."

Thanks so much for sharing Kos  I like this one  do you remember there used to be an old song I don't remember the exact name but part of the lyrics were ....."One day at a time sweet Jesus......that's all I'm asking of You".....do any of you recognize it????  what was the name??????

Yes, I remember it well because if was used a great deal as a worship song in the late 1970's at a campus ministry with which we were helping.  Here is a wonderful rendition by a great singer, Linda Randle.

Thanks, KOS, that's beautiful. April, I remember the other song, too. I think my mother had a cassette of the Christy Lane version.

KOS, which Wheaton College did you go to?

Friendship is a priceless gift that can't be bought or sold, its value is far greater than a mountain made of gold.
May this FriendSHIP always have wind in its sails and a sunrise on the horizon.
