KOS, We are from the somewhat the same era... My mother would never have gone to church or any social function without a hat. And she had a beautiful collection.
Gloves, of course, too. And bag (purse) always matched or coordinated with one's shoes.

I love to see ladies wearing stylish hats, although my real choice would be a very functional and well-worn visor (that I wouldn't wear to church or a wedding, however).

Yep---I remember that as well. When I was a flower girl at about age 5 or so in an uncle's wedding, I had the little "bag" as well to match the dress.
