View your posts have brought back so many memories.
These are the English lyrics to the above chorale: "We sit down with tears and call to You in the grave: rest gently, gently rest! Rest, you exhausted limbs! - Rest gently, rest well. - Your grave and headstone shall, for the anxious conscience, be a comfortable pillow and the resting place for the soul. - rest gently, gently rest! Highly contented, there the eyes fall asleep."
I was a freshman in college when, as part of four choral groups at Wheaton College, I got to sing in my first performance of the St. Matthew Passion. It was hard not to have tears while rehearsing and definitely while performing this great work of art. And in that chorus was John Nelson, (Like me a missionary's kid: he from Costa Rica and me from China) who has become one of the best known and most respected choral and symphony conductors in the world. I took a group of teenagers, during a major winter storm to watch him conduct the Chicago Symphony in Dec. of 1973 when he took George Solti's place. His mission now? To bring Bach to the entire world; to found an organization called Soli del Gloria, the words that Bach put on every piece of music that he wrote; and to use funds from that organization to help gifted composers who have a passion for composing sacred music but have very little money. In Paris and now in Chicago, he and his orchestra performed one of three works of Bach's during the Easter season: The St. Matthew Passion; The B Minor Mass; St. John's Passion.
It is good to remember< in a time when fame and wealth seem to have co-opted almost everything, that Bach was barely able to support his family as he composed some of the greatest music ever; that he never gave up: that the Lutheran Churches in which he worked often gave him great difficulty; that while Handel was experiencing fame and wealth in England, Bach was not experiencing either in Germany; that when he died, like Mozart, he was buried in a pauper's grave; and that his wife was asked to refund to the church the remainder of the money that had been prepaid for the year. I tell his story a lot because today serious musicians think they have failed if they have not achieved fame and at least a modest fortune. Yet he today is considered to be the giant among giants of music. I will never forget the looks on faces of teens when I compared the Beatles music to Bach's (and other Baroque composers) by playing music back to back because you can actually hear how the "continuo" lines in Baroque music have greatly impacted rock musicians who are real musicians and not just "wanna-be" stars. The Baroque age was also a time of improvisation and also greatly impacted jazz. Years ago, Garrison Keeler covered Bach's life and obstacles in a great sketch on the Prairie Home Companion.

Hey April...
Sorry to here you can't do her treatment but happy you can be home for Easter...Will keep my fingers crossed for Tuesday...
Zelda the kitty is doing better each day...eating a bit more and I have to check her sugar twice a day and has been good since Wednesday without any insulin.
Bella is doing a well as expected. She is not eating much and right now is only eating organic chicken patties and veggie chicken nuggets. She has a hard time moving around and not sure the pain is in her hip where the "C" is or her torn ACL...most likely the hip. She also went to the doctor today and we just have to keep her happy and comfortable...She does get a little pep every now and then and still barks at noises...LOL
