Val Chmerkovskiy Memoir

By Valentin Chmerkovskiy

Valentin “Val” Chmerkovskiy, the Ukranian-born dance champion, has captivated viewers of Dancing With the Stars since he joined the show in 2011. Now, for the first time, Val opens up to fans sharing the story of his life and career. He reflects on his childhood in Odessa, Ukraine and immigrating to the U.S. as a Jewish refugee, his teenage years in America with his tight-knit family, and the collaborations and competitions with his brother and fellow DWTS dancing sensation, Maksim “Maks” Chmerkovskiy.

This memoir will not only reveal intimate stories from Val’s life, it will also provide motivation. Val is much more than the star viewers watch on the DWTS each week, he is a deep, thoughtful person who has shared his socially-conscious views through his choreography, and now will be able to express them in the pages of his book. Looking back, Val delves into his immigration story at the young age of eight, trying desperately to fit into American culture. He shares how his parents believed, after experiences of antisemitism in Ukraine, that moving to America would afford their family a better life. Feeling like an outsider in America, Val talks about the gratitude he has to this country, and to his experiences rising to dance fame.

Inspiring, heartfelt, and well-written, this book will be filled with moments that have moved and shaped him, and that will move readers. Including Val’s poetry and 16-pages of never-before-seen photos, this book will be a keepsake for fans of Val and Dancing With the Stars.
