Hey, gunner....yes, i am a quilter. Have sewn all my life and found my real passion when I started actually learning the proper process since about 2000. Dabble in it earlier--in the '80s when they were promoting "quilt as you to". I don't know anyone (including myself!) who tried that and finished anything!! HAHA I'd love to share! Don't claim to know that much, but I'm pretty much doing something with it when I have a free moment or two. A lot of the good shops have gone out of business in SoCal the past few years. Was a great one in Redlands area called The Calico Horse. Not there anymore--and some others around the area. Couple good ones in Riverside area--and Monica's in Palm Desert is HUGE!
Do you have a particular area of interest? I love the retro stuff--fabs--like 1930s and Civil War. I could go on and on, as you can see.... Let's get together! Always love to meet new aspiring quilters! It is such fun!Oh No....they are going to set up another quilters thread for us!!! LOL.....The Calico Horse is still there in Redlands, but under new ownership and called the Painted Lady or something like that. They don't really much of anything that I like. They are heavy into Civil War fabrics. Used to love those but I seem to gravitate more to the new exciting colors. But, I do have a thing for 30's reproduction. I am currently piecing a quilt in that right now. Did you ever know the owner Debbie of Calico Horse? Did you know she died...quite a while back.
Good quilt stores are hard to find. None out my way anymore, I have to go to Orange County. Have you ever been to Orange Quilt Bee on Katella in Orange? It is really nice. Also there is a real nice one in Yorba Linda but............the shop is now for sale!!
Well, maybe we have met each other in some quilt shop in the past!! LOL I love Orange Quilt Bee and Calico House (Placentia)! I know CH is for sale now. What a bum. I think they have gotten too big even though they are one of the best in the area. Every been to any in SD? I go down there a couple times a month to see grandkids and there are some nice ones down there. Ever been to Rosie's down there? The mother of all quilt shops!! HAHA The other one I was sad about losing was the Quilt Coop in Temecula. It was dynamite as well....but gone. I didn't know that Calico Horse's owner died and that it was recycled.
I finished a queen sized (but with pillow tuck and overhangs) quilt with a bunch of appliqued borders called Calico Garden in 1930s reproductions about a year ago. Still need to make the pillow shams for it but am using it on the bed. I quilt all my stuff--don't send it out. Mostly do it by machine but I love doing hand work so actually hand quilted another queen sized one that took me like 12 years from start to finish!! HAHA Spent more time waiting for the weather to cool off enough so I could stand to work on it--and it was waaaaay too ambitious for my level of experience at the time--but at least I got it done!!
So excited that we have quilting in common as well!!![]()
It is exciting....think we have passed each other in some shops. Yes, I have been to several in San Diego are (bro lives there) but not Rosy's. Need to put that on my list. There is one really great one in San Marcos.....tons and tons and tons of awesome fabric including wool! I don't do my machine quilting, pay someone else to do it. It just looks so difficult to even get it basted right. I have done a couple of small wall hangings doing hand quilting. I struggle with a thimble so it is tough. Did you used to go to Leah's?

Are you referring to the shop in the gray farmhouse--Fat Quarters Quilt Shop--actually in Vista? It is FABULOUS--one of my favs anywhere. Not far north off the 78? Lots of wool, upstairs, downstairs, little rooms and the attic? Of course I used to go to Leah's when there were several; there was one in Cerritos Mall. The last one to bite it wasn't far from Orange Quilt Bee before it opened. I think one of the Leah's owners may be a partner in OQB? Not sure, tho. Have you been to Flying Geese in Tustin? There is another big one on the 15 north of Escondido called.....let me think....hmmmm...can't recall right now. Nice shop. Will have to look through my quilt run stuff from June for the name. Been there twice.
Do you know M&L Fabrics in Anaheim (I think it is Anaheim right there)--Knott Ave. and Cerritos Ave.? Probably the MOST fabric in one spot on the planet!!! HAHA You have to be careful to check for quality, tho, cuz it's not quilt shop grade but some of it is not that bad (better than Joann, for sure)--and really check the flat folds. It's not far from me--maybe 5 miles. Prices are very good on some stuff and less than quilt shop on everything--20% off on notions.
