It has been active for over 10 years. We were there about 10 years ago and they closed Volcano National Park because of the fumes and the activity. So it's been spewing lava for quite a while....and growing the state of Hawaii!!!! LOL

The goal is to build and fly a radio control model that as closely as possible replicates the same airplane in full scale. Some of them are HUGE! Son has his dad's passion for that stuff and does an incredible job. He won another comparable national competition 3 years ago....by something like .07 of a point!!! LOL

do they have kids competitions too????

It's only 8 miles straight down the road till it ends....if the kids are around, we go. Don't go down that much otherwise (no quilt shops down there!!). Parking is limited and they do issue tickets!!! LOL

It's always fun because there are so many critters to pick up and play with!!! LOL. I remember when we went down a few years ago, grandson had a HUGE meltdown because I wouldn't let him pick barnacles off the pier (just obeying the sign!!). Funny what. causes kids to melt down!!! lOL

Do they judge on looks and how long it flies?

They judge on accuracy to your documentation fo the real airplane and also how you fly it. If you have a Piper J3 Cub, you have to fly it at the relative speed and do only maneuvers that the real one could do (like no loops and rolls!). If you're flying a jet, you have to do stuff that the real one does as well...and not do things it doesn't do on a mission (even if the model could do those manuevers). Also how well you land it, general realism of the entire flight, etc.

We're doing well. Still busy. The little one received her First Communion yesterday, which was nice. The older ones are doing some off-season robotics demonstrations and probably a competition in a couple weeks.
