Dancing with the Stars: Episode 2603 (5/14)

THE SIX REMAINING ATHLETES PREPARE FOR YET ANOTHER DOUBLE-HEADER AS THEY GET SET TO PERFORM ONE INDIVIDUAL DANCE ALONG WITH A DANCE-OFF BATTLE, ON THE SEMI-FINALS OF ABC’S ‘DANCING WITH THE STARS: ATHLETES,’

MAY 14

Season 24 Runner-Up David Ross Returns to the Ballroom to Guest Judge

Viewers Can Vote Live for the Dance-Offs Via an Online
‘Passion Meter’ in the EDT/CDT Time Zones

At the End of the Night, There Will Be a Triple Elimination!

The six remaining athletes are ramping up their spring dance training as they ready themselves for another double-header, on the semi-finals of “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes,” MONDAY, MAY 14 (8:00-10:01 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand. “Dancing with the Stars” season 24 runner-up David Ross returns to the ballroom as a guest judge, alongside Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba.

In round one, each couple will perform an individual dance inspired by the MVP in each athlete’s life. Each couple will perform a foxtrot, Viennese waltz, quickstep, rumba or contemporary routine. Then in round two of the evening, the athletes will lace up for a Ballroom Battle dance-off with three toe-to-toe performances. Each dance-off pairing will perform a cha cha, jive or salsa. During each dance-off, the public will be allowed to vote for their favorite couple via an online “Passion Meter” at abc.com during the live EDT/CDT airing of the show – and in the event of a tie on the judges’ panel, the couple that wins America’s Vote will be named winner of the dance-off. The couple that wins each dance-off will receive bonus points, which will be combined with their individual dance scores from round one. Those totals will be added to the previous week’s public votes to determine the results of the triple elimination at the end of the night.

The three remaining couples will move on to the finals, airing on May 21, where, at the end of the evening, one of them will be crowned champion and take home the coveted Mirrorball trophy.

Each couple will dance to the following songs (in alphabetical order):

Adam Rippon and Jenna Johnson – Contemporary – “O” by Coldplay

Chris Mazdzer and Witney Carson – Foxtrot – “I Got Rhythm” by Ray Chew Live

Jennie Finch Daigle and Keo Motsepe – Viennese Waltz – “The Rest of Our Life” by Tim McGraw & Faith Hill

Josh Norman and Sharna Burgess – Contemporary – “Stand By Me” by Bootstraps

Mirai Nagasu and Alan Bersten – Quickstep – “Bo$$” by Ray Chew Live

Tonya Harding and Sasha Farber – Rumba – “See You Again” by Tyler Ward

For the Ballroom Battle Dance-Off, the teams are divided up as follows (in alphabetical order):

Chris Mazdzer & Witney Carson and Josh Norman & Sharna Burgess – Salsa – “WTF (Where They From)” by Missy Elliott featuring Pharrell Williams

Olympic Gold Medalist Meryl Davis on Life After Competition  When Meryl Davis and partner Charlie White retired from competition after scoring the U.S. its first ice dancing gold medal in 2014, she thought her life would slow down.

“To be honest, I think the opposite might be true,” Davis says.

While she does allow herself the luxury of a lazy morning, Davis and White continue to travel around the country to perform their routines for awestruck audiences. Parade recently chatted with Davis about what she thought of the 2018 Winter Games, how her life has changed since retiring and what she’s setting her sights on next.

What were your thoughts on ice dancing at the Olympics this year?
I thought it was a fabulous event with incredible talent. The sport changes not just every four years, but from one year to the next. It was a lot of fun for me to be able to be on the other side of things. When you’re competing, your primary focus has to be on yourself. To be able to be a fan and enjoy everyone’s performance without having to focus on my own performance was really enjoyable.

What were your feelings about not competing this year?
Charlie and I took a long time after Sochi [deciding] whether or not we wanted to return to competition. We made that official decision [to retire] in February 2017. While we had given ourselves a lot of time to make the decision, and we were sure that it was the right decision, I wasn’t sure how I would feel not competing. I was very relieved that when the Games finally began, I felt great. I was worried that when the time came, I would have a different feeling, but I was happy that wasn’t the case. It just feels right. Charlie and I had such an incredibly satisfying competitive career, to watch the Games and have that be a pleasure, instead of wishing I was there on the ice, was definitely a nice feeling.

How have your diet and exercise routines changed since you’ve stopped competing?
When you’re a competitive athlete, your number one priority has to be health and wellness and making decisions to put you in the best position to perform at the highest level possible. It’s unique in skating because we transition away from being athletes to being performers. While we’re still athletes, the performance side of things takes center stage. Charlie and I are actually on the road significantly more now than when we were competing. [We’re] home a lot less and [there’s] less structure. I had to adjust to make it work. When you’re a competitive athlete, you wake up every morning and you know exactly what it is you have to do, when you have to do it, how many times you have to do it, who’s telling you to do it—as a performer, we’re professionals and this is a career we love, but it’s up to us. We don’t have coaches telling us what to do and when to do it and where to do it.

I eat a lot less than I did when I was competing. When we were training for the Olympics, we were physically active six hours a day. Now, it’s not the same level of intensity. I don’t burn nearly as many calories now as I did when I was competing. I’m just not as hungry. As far as fitness now, I take my years of working with talented professionals and just apply it on my own time. Luckily I have a lot of experience to draw from. Exercises I know are good for my body, exercises that make me feel my best, I’ll just on a whim decide what I need. It’s fun to have the freedom to make some of my own decisions.

How do you stay to motivated to stay fit now that you’re not competing?
Coming to terms to the fact that my body doesn’t necessarily have to be the exact same way it was when I was competing is important. You don’t have to be in that same type of shape to be happy and healthy. I feel great, I feel very physically fit, but it’s very different than it was when I was competing, and that’s OK. I lift weights a lot less, I do a lot more cardio. Understanding how I feel my best, instead of focusing on being the best athlete I can be is a very different approach. I’ve enjoyed the transition. In terms of motivation, I think as an athlete one of the things you learn early on—your choices are impacting you. Whether it’s what you’re putting into your body, what you’re doing in terms of a workout routine, how much sleep you’re getting, how much you’re focusing on hydrating—it has a direct impact on not only your performance, but how you feel. For me, understanding that has an impact on my decisions.

In general, do you miss competing or are you enjoying the performance aspect now?
Both. I will always miss competing. It’s something that I was passionate about. I think the thing I miss most about competing is the ability to focus on that skill and prioritize it. But there’s a balance. Now, I find joy in being able to spend time doing things I didn’t get to do when I was competing. Having more of a social life, opening myself up to other passions and career opportunities and something as small as sleeping in and skipping the gym. It seems small, but it’s a big change and having the luxury to be a bit more impulsive is something that’s necessary when you’re trying to figure out what your next chapter might be.

Now that you’re next chapter is starting, what do you want to accomplish?
I’ve explored a lot of different things over the course of the last few years. I’m realizing that I have a very entrepreneurial spirit, and I’m passionate about really creating something of my own. I think that’s something I’m looking to do in the future. But my first concrete goal is finally graduating university. I’ve been going to the University of Michigan since 2006—I’m 31, it’s been a very long road. Traveling with skating and touring professionally, it’s been hard to go to school full-time. I’m set to graduate next May. I’m very excited for that.https://parade.com/664871/samanthacoley/olympic-gold-medalist-meryl-davis-on-ice-dancing-changes-to-her-routines-and-goals-for-the-future/
