Media saying it could be a precursor for a bigger one. In the high desert but they aren’t saying how deep it was. Aftershakes are happening in the area near the epicenter.

Saying 8.7 kilometers down, which is very shallow as far as earthquakes go. Most of them are in the ocean and pretty deep.
Is that good or bad?

What is the difference between a "jolt" and a "roller" earthquake?

I have to laugh at the reaction to earthquakes by the media. I know it’s out of the ordinary, which makes it news worthy, but most of the time it’s not that big of a deal!! Hubby and I were just talking about seeing Lucy Jones (USGS lady)...and wondering if she is still around....then the newscasters just mentioned they will probably hear from her soon!! She’s only been there for about 40 years!!! LOL.

A jolt feels jerky, usually has a noise with it when it starts—like a “bang”. Roller is just like being on an amusement park ride without the speed. It really does just roll!!! LOL. Even the local news reports of residents close to the epicenter are saying it was a roller there as well so less likely to have damage.
Oh—an interesting fact is that earthquakes are the reason most structures in these (earthquake prone) regions such as CA are built without basements and are wood frame with stucco exteriors....so they sustain less damage from earthquakes because the buildings just kind’ve sway with the quake!

Having an earthquake right now as I’m writing this!! GUNNER....DID YOU FEEL IT?? Still going...hanging lamp is swaying. Kind’ve a roller!!! Pretty significant somewhere, I suspect.
6.6 on the Richter scale in Searles Valley near Mojave/Ridgecrest near Death Valley. Not a heavily populated region out there...but for us to feel the intensity and rolling motion is kind’ve a big deal!!Oh wow......how scary. Glad it wasn't in a too populated area. 6.6 is pretty big....right? Might even make the National news......hope you didn't have any damage.
Oh goodness.....that sounds scary......so glad you and Gunner are all ok ((hugs))
