Humm,  maybe he didn't trust his feelings for Meryl? or really understand them.  He knew he loved her.......but what kind of love?   He did have a "relationship" with Erin after her season. Maybe, he was afraid that it was a "summer romance" ?  I know that he never wants to hurt Meryl in anyway, so maybe, he was taking his time to really figure out what he wanted?  Jet,  you sure posed a good question.

 
I think you are right, Luv; I think they both may have kinda taken a break to figure out what was lastingly "real" and what might have been a showmance of sorts.  He wasn't long with Erin, tho--and never had anything close with her to what he has/had with Meryl. I know he recognized that as well based on what he has said.  I'm sure his head has been swimming....and that's a good thing, really.  I know he won't want to get into another engagement that might fall apart.  That would be too hurtful and cause him to distrust himself.  So these months that have seemed like years (!) LOL.....have been very important, I"m sure.  We are just impatient!!!
