I think that mentally he has been going back and forth about the quad axel. After seeing Yuma's skate, he knew he didn't have to do it to win. But he wanted to make history. It looked like he decided to go for it, but that little bit of doubt made him pop. Then, he started doing mental calculations to figure out how to maximize points. You see it when athletes miss a combination and then add it later, But he was overthinking everything. He accidentally did 2 quad flips (or maybe lutzes, I forget which), neither in combination. So Tara & Johnny were saying that was a deduction, most skaters aren't even doing quad flips or lutzes. But when he popped his quad salchow into a double and then fell on it, that was really the end. I am still shocked that he was 15th in free skate, even with falls. But that last fall was a big oof.
I still can’t believe he went for that quad axel. He was winning everything without it. I read he had a very good warm up so I’m guessing the fall on that quad axel must’ve thrown him off. I wonder what his father thought about that decision. Someone said he didn’t appear to comfort Ilia afterwards. I also heard that immediately after his skate, Ilia told his father that they should’ve sent him to the Beijing Olympics. I remember there was a lot of talk back then that the U.S made a big mistake in not sending him so that he could get some experience under his belt for the next Olympics.
I agree with whoever said that HIs father didn't say anything or comfort him in any way after he came off the ice. He did seem uncomfortable and a bit mad......IMO.....I wonder if that is why Ilia said that if they had sent him to Beijing that he wouldn't have skated like that......did he feel like he needed to "justify" his performance to his father? It just seemed a bit odd that that was one of the first things out of his mouth. I kind of am taking that comment a bit different now than when I first heard him say that.

I sure hope so......I thought him going over to the winner, right afterwards was fantastic. I have been impressed with his interviews afterwards.

Glad that Danny and Ellie had a pretty decent skate.

Luv, I thought the same thing you did - that Ilia felt he needed an excuse for why he didn't skate well. I bet his father wasn't pleased he went for the quad axel.
On the plus side, Ilia now has a million followers on Instagram! Before the Olympics he had between 300 - 400,000. Good for him! That has to make him happy.
Oh, and did you see him sitting in the stands watching the Pairs competition? He was sitting between Donovan Carrillo of Mexico and Piper Gilles of Canada. He looked very relaxed, it was good to see. ![]()

I missed most of the skating live, so will catch it tonight. I did see the medal winners though.
