Well, ladies, it's definitely the haze from forest fires - most likely in California but there were also fires in Canada and the smoke particles have made their way here.
I saw this picture of Chicago from a couple of weeks ago and it describes perfectly what is now happening here in North Dakota. Even though the sky is totally cloudless, the sun is slightly obscured and it's light filtered, less intense.
Very pretty result this morning. And when Mount St. Helens erupted many years ago and the ash drifted this way - similar.
